Stop vulture funds

The vultures are circling! Vulture funds are private companies that try to scavenge profit from some of the world's poorest countries. Please join our efforts to urge the Government to take action to stop this.

vulture

Vulture funds seek to make profit by buying up the debts of heavily indebted poor countries at a cheap price, then trying to recover the full amount, often by suing through the courts. These companies tend to be quite secretive, and many of them are based in tax havens. The activities of vulture funds highlight the flaws in the global financial system, which we all now recognise is in dire need of reform.

Please come to our parliamentary meeting and invite your MP to hear our concerns:

Vulture funds and tax havens: cleaning up global finance
6.30pm, Tuesday 27 January 2009
Wilson Room, Portcullis House, Westminster, London SW1.

Speakers include John Richards, a lawyer based in Washington D.C., and Tammi Gaw from TransAfrica Forum, who will speak about the US Stop Vulture Funds Bill currently being pursued through Congress; Richard Murphy from Tax Justice Network who will talk about the links with tax havens; and Sarah Edwards from Jubilee Debt Campaign who will talk about the broader context of vulture fund activity and its impact on debt relief.

The meeting will be an opportunity to discuss what reforms, both nationally and globally, are needed to tackle the vulture funds and to address tax havens.
