Cancel Haiti's debt NOW

Haiti is in the grip of the food crisis which is currently affecting much of the world, as soaring food prices cripple many poor countries. Meanwhile Haiti is still shelling out millions of dollars in debt repayments while its people starve.

The global food crisis is having a devastating impact on many developing countries, and world leaders and institutions like the International Monetary Fund have spent recent months discussing how to tackle it. Cancelling debts would be one concrete action that would help to alleviate the suffering of Haiti and other affected countries.

Chancellor Alistair Darling represents the UK at the International Monetary Fund and has been involved in many of the discussions around the food price hikes. So far campaigners' calls to drop the debt burden of countries like Haiti have not been heeded. Please email Alistair Darling now to ask him to work for accelerated debt cancellation for Haiti and in the meantime an immediate moratorium on the country's debt service payments.

You can also read Jubilee Debt Campaign's statement on the food crisis, jointly with Jubilee USA and New Economics Foundation, and a joint letter we have signed with many other civil society groups, addressed to the G8 finance ministers. Download these documents on the right.
